The undersea world of a massive sea monster has been discovered off the coast of Papua New Guinea in the remote Pacific Ocean, near the Mariana islands.
When a British researcher obtained a murky black and white photo taken during the Second World War by one of the first divers to explore the sunken HMAS Sydney, researcher Phil Manning discovered a giant 45-foot long, blue-green, reptile-like creature.
Soon the news spread to Fleet Street, where the story of the “monster of the deep” stirred public interest and prompted divers to make new discoveries of their own.

This combined 15 minute clip shows the footage from the original 35mm material, taken by a scientist aboard HMS Endurance in 1944. The images, never seen until now, were shot by a British-born diver on his first ever dive on the vessel’s deck and captured images of a massive fin-shaped, 45-foot-long creature approaching his camera.
The footage then cuts to present-day underwater footage of the creature as it swam in a deep cave in Papua New Guinea. The footage, taken in March 2017 by, then shows that a dim, murky black and white image was taken from the source of the footage.
After years, the image of the monster’s been lost in the murky history of the world and work by Manning attempts to bring the tale of the Sydney-based creature back into the public eye.
Divers, who are studying the sea monster for years, sometimes brought photographs taken by other divers to cameras and computer programs in attempt to identify the creature.
While waiting for experts to study the image, Manning told news outlets that he had searched through files and archives trying to find the original source of the image.
“For the past three years I’ve been trying to find out where the original 35mm film was and why it no longer exists,” Manning told news outlets. “I found the only surviving copy was a print which ended up on the internet.”
