Purpose Breastfeeding is the only food that the infant needs for growth and development. It is an integral part of infant feeding and is highly significant for infant growth and development. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes of a breastfeeding support session to a standard prenatal care session on breastfeeding outcomes. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted comparing outcomes of breastfeeding support and standard prenatal care on maternal breastfeeding outcomes at 1 month and 6 months postpartum. Participants were recruited from a tertiary care hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Main outcome measures Infant feeding outcomes and self-reported breastfeeding practices were assessed using the Parent Feeding Assessment Tool, Child Feeding Questionnaire, and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale. Results A total of 89 participants were recruited; 39 completed the intervention and 42 completed the usual prenatal care. The intervention group had more mothers who reported breastfeeding exclusively and for 6 months or more at 1 month postpartum (48.1% vs 16.2%, P = 0.02). In addition, mothers in the intervention group reported higher self-efficacy scores (21.8 ± 3.5 vs 17.3 ± 2.9, P = 0.03) and a greater number of breastfeeding skills (4.5 ± 1.0 vs 3.9 ± 0.9, P = 0.04) at 1 month. Improvements in self-efficacy scores were maintained at 6 months postpartum (21.6 ± 3.7 vs 17.8 ± 2.6, P = 0.
